Who’s Bailing Out Who? – Mark W. Foster – 03/17/2009 “Do not ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.” – Ernest Miller Hemingway As we come to the end of the first Quarter of 2009 it seems business is beginning to numb itself to the barrage of negative spin. Media continues to use the economic climate as their very own bailout – in a failing industry (FYI – see US Newspaper Industry below) by way of up to the minute reports with catch words and phrases that deserve a rest. Despite governments all over the globe’s promises to shore up the economic woes, the reality is that this will be – and should be – a bottom up recovery. Let’s face it – after all it is ultimately the government’s ability to collect taxes that guarantees the bailouts – not the money management skills of the respective governments. Small to medium sized business will continue to create employment and pay taxes which are after all the only way out of this mess. Yes, we need to see a “stabilized” (much over used word these days) financial and banking industry, but in the meantime we must get on with the business at hand – our own business. Confidence (investor and otherwise) will be restored once there are signs of progress. Progress is something that you and I can provide, albeit in small increments. A bottom up bailout is the answer, as it is the only true means of rebuilding the business infrastructure in an effort to meet the recovery of financial/banking and investor confidence. Despite the hoopla, a concentrated and positive effort to move forward is necessary. Running our business day to day with smart and innovative thinking is a means to that end. Here’s to the ever resilient entrepreneurial spirit in all of us! For more strategies on rebuilding please see the 7 Ways Forward link below. Four Ways to Improve Your Team’s Performance - Daisy Wademan Dowling – Harvard Management Update
Face it: 2009 is going to be your toughest year yet. Budgets are lower, expectations are higher, and you’re under pressure to deliver the goods — no mistakes or hiccups allowed. That’s a tall order even if you’ve got a seasoned team of highly motivated A+ performers. But what if you don’t? What if, like most managers, you’re dealing with a strong but not stellar group, players of varying drive and skill, and a severely limited ability to bring in fresh talent? A recent New York Times article demonstrates how the right approach to coaching your team can let you achieve spectacular performance — no matter what the environment. The article describes Tom Donnelly, the men’s track and field coach for the past 34 years at Haverford College, a Quaker school with fewer than 1,200 students. Despite the school’s tiny enrollment, noncompetitive philosophy, and lack of athletic scholarships, Donnelly has managed to produce 113 All-Americans and 24 individual N.C.A.A. champions — a jaw-dropping record for a school of any size or budget. He’s also sent runners to each of the past four Olympic trials, and won more “Coach of the Year” awards than anyone can seem to count. (His team boasts the highest average GPA of any Division III track team, too.) Donnelly’s superb, sustained results are the kind every manager dreams of. MORE >>

| LATEST BUSINESS NEWS (The Economist) – Despite the downturn, entrepreneurs are enjoying a renaissance the world over, says Adrian Wooldridge. IN DECEMBER last year, three weeks after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and in the midst of the worst global recession since the 1930s, 1,700 bright-eyed Indians gathered in a hotel in Bangalore for a conference on entrepreneurship. They mobbed business heroes such as Azim Premji, who transformed Wipro from a vegetable-oil company into a software giant, and Nandan Nilekani, one of the founders of Infosys, another software giant. They also engaged in a frenzy of networking. The conference was so popular that the organisers had to erect a huge tent to take the overflow. MORE >> |
