Summertime…and the living is easy! June 16, 2009 Ok, easy might be a stretch, but things are certainly heading in a positive, upward direction. Everyone I talk to seems to be optimistic and most of the naysayers have either gone to ground( except, of course, the economists who are quietly waiting to be recognized as the geniuses they are J), or have changed the direction of their spin. Aside from the car manufacturer’s woes, the economy has simply geared down causing people and companies to get back to business. The downturn to date has proven to provide a bit of a wakeup call and…to some degree, a long overdue financial house cleaning. Very timely, don’t you think? This month I have called/cajoled/pleaded with 3 business associates who I am happy to say make up part of my inner sanctum of sanity and reason when considering business directions. Patrick Conroy, Steve Dunn & Vince Taylor provide their respective insights on business management, market investing & the current real estate market. Their email addresses are included, in the event you want to contact them with your comments/feedback. Have a great June - drop you a line next month! – Mark
"An Underexploited Cost Reducton Strategy" June 16, 2009 – Patrick Conroy – ReWork Consultant & Author
I wrote this article to avoid going to jail. Mark Foster convinced me it would be better to vent here than to bop someone on the head for continuing to ignore a bulletproof cost reduction opportunity. I’m referring to Rework, which in just about any industry accounts for at least 20% of project budgets – at least half of which is avoidable or recoverable with very little effort of the right kind. Yes, that’s a 10% cost reduction, maybe more, just lying there, lonely and ignored. It drives me nuts knowing that this much competitive advantage and profit protection seems to be routinely overlooked.
Take the software business, where the stats say that 80% of all projects fail to deliver what was ordered on time on budget at a tolerable defect level, because Rework gobbles up some 40% (!) of project budgets, on average. If you’re in construction, you know that fixing a wiring problem after the walls have been closed up costs maybe 10 times more than fixing it when it happens, and way, way more than preventing it in the first place. Same with manufacturing – product recalls to replace a flawed component are many thousands (millions?) of times more expensive than one additional design review. Service industries are similarly impacted… I could pick away until I get to your business, but I bet you already know there’s something wrong in your neck of the woods. So why aren’t more folks all over this opportunity for a killer competitive advantage and profit protector?….MORE >> June 15, 2009 – Steve Dunn – Private Investor & Entrepreneur

Starting this month I will be writing a regular column in the FFS’s monthly newsletter on Canada’s economic recovery. I am Steve Dunn, an entrepreneur perhaps not unlike yourself, except that I am on a sabbatical. Being on a sabbatical gives one a rather unique opportunity to pay attention to what is going on out there…and to profit from the largest economic discontinuity the world has seen since the Great Depression. This is not idle speculation on my part. I am an active capital and commodity trader in what is arguably the biggest investment opportunity of a lifetime.
So back to the purpose of this column. Where are we at in Canada? Well, here is a recent commentary from RBC
