"So long, recession?" August 18, 2009
As I read through the printed and blogged opinions this week on the state of the Canadian economy, they all seem to be convinced that this very short, but very scary recession has all but come to an end. If it had been a nuclear attack, we are now just awaiting the radiation dissipation period and we can once again come out from our financial b-shelters to spend, spend, spend! One article in Macleans ( Aug 24th – Scott Freschuk ) made light of our ability to emerge from the financial crisis and it’s worth a read. There were 3 leading edge indicators according to Scott. The first, being the publication of over 2,500 books on the topic of the crisis itself. Seems like a likely approach. Begin writing incessantly about it, in an effort to jumpstart it. The second was the fact that we just plain old got bored with it. A comparison to the Great Depression noted that with the abundance of technology we have available, providing a constant bombardment of information, we just plain old had enough and moved on! And the third and last point was Michael Jackson’s passing. As Apple raked in giga-millions in refreshed sales of Jackson’s music, there was an indication that the U.S. Secretary Treasurer spied this trend and has devised a plan to respond to the next economic downturn by immediately killing off Fleetwood Mac. All good stuff! Keep on enjoying that sunshine! EMAILMARK "Project Management Tools – ROI’s from 250% to 500% !!" Depending on which research study you read using Project Management Tools show incredible returns on investment and are starting to enter the mainstream of business tools. In the past they have been limited to either very large organizations or companies with project managers using specific software firmly entrenched in the operations. The limitations in the past have been a near vanguard-like attitude by PM’s as they have the info, the power. Not so any more, as the tools are much more user/team friendly and have a vast number of features for organising beyond the scope of project related tasks. With a proliferation of PM Tools now available, as a business owner or project manager within a business, it would serve you well to do a little research in this area. As companies/organisations are retooling for the uptick in business ahead, it will provide a clear advantage beyond just that of one over your competition. We have a copy of one of the studies on our website that you can download and I have another I will post later today!

TOP 10 UNWRITTEN LAWS OF TECHNOLOGY Law 1: For every fix that a Windows Update patches, the update will break two more things on your PC. Law 2: The likelihood that Windows will automatically install time-sucking critical updates is directly proportional to your need to get your PC started. Law 3: The hard drive always fails just before you were going to back it up. Law 4: Your data will get corrupted just before you plug in your new backup external drive. Law 5: Your backup plan is only as good as your last successful restore. Law 6: The number of USB ports on your Mac will always be one less than you need at any given time. Law 7: Feeling time pressure to make a computer fix quickly will cause you to take longer. Law 8: If you close the PC case with screws before testing, it won’t work; If you test before closing, it will. Law 9: Recommend a product that you’ve used with no problems, and the friend/family member who buys it will immediately descend into RMA – product return - hell. Law 10: If it’s broken and you call tech support, it will fix itself while you’re on hold.
